Portofino & Santa Margherita, Italy - June 9 2010

After Milan, we were headed to our final destination in Italy, Cinque Terre. These are five towns, close to Genoa, that are connected only by train. We stayed on a campground in a town called Deiva Marina outside of these five towns (accommodation within the towns is very expensive). We arrived sometime in the afternoon, and before we visited any of the five towns we decided to visit Portofino by way of Santa Margherita.

Following suit with the rest of Italy, Portofino didn't live up to our expectations. We had heard great things about its beauty but we were generally underwhelmed (we think we were REALLY spoiled by Greece!).

One corner of Portofino. To the right outside of the photo and behind the camera is the water.

Here you can see the water!

We liked these random hot pink meerkats. These were taken on the harbour, looking up towards a hill which housed a castle.

Here we are on a hike through the woods on the hill towards the castle, looking across the water to the other side of the town.

A shot of one side of the castle, Castello Brown (what an Italian name, huh?)!

A shot from a higher point in the hike.

Two (very similar) views of the town from the top of the castle.

Here is a shot of the back of the castle from its back terrace.

A view of Portofino from the harbour.

Cute little road through Portofino.

To get to Portofino we had to take a train to a town called Santa Margherita, then from there take a bus to Portofino. We were so underwhelmed by Portofino we decided to call it a day there early and head back towards Santa Margherita for dinner and to check out the town. Above is a picture of the town...cute, right?

Another shot of the town.

The centre roundabout thingy of the town, just out of the picture to the left is the shoreline.

Surprise, surprise: pizza for dinner! We had a hard time finding agreeable non-pizza food for dinner so we ended up ordering some 'za from a small pizzeria. We were already starving by this point, so of course just when we finished reading the menu outside and decided to go in and order, the place was invaded by lots of young kids who were all clamouring for some food! After a very lengthy wait we finally got our precious dinner! Cliff's: eggplant, zucchini, capers, and anchovies on a tomato sauce.

Stefan's: Mozza and stracchino cheeses, rocket, and zucchini with pockets of tomato sauce.  Oh, and super thin crust which is always awesome!  It was pretty yummy, especially because of the painful long wait we had to endure for the pizza!

A view of Santa Margherita from the train station, which sits higher up outside of the town.

Awwww...well, Italy is romantic anyway, but we thought this street writing was pretty cute and sweet...oddly enough the sun had almost set and the moon was out when we saw this graffiti at the Santa Margherita train station!  We had a perhaps cheesy (but who cares when you are in love :P) moment!
